England reach quarter-finals live - Rice clashes with manager after Kane winner (2024)

England are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a stunning comeback win over Slovakia.

The underdogs had actually taken the lead halfway through the first-half when Ivan Schranz raced into the box to poke a low finish past England keeper Jordan Pickford. England struggled to get themselves back into the game, as boss Gareth Southgate resisted the urge to make substitutions.

But with seconds remaining of normal time, Marc Guehi flicked on a long throw and Jude Bellingham pulled off a stunning overhead kick to equalise. Bellingham's wondergoal sent the match into extra-time.

And just 52 seconds into that extra period, captain Harry Kane nodded in at the far post to put the Three Lions ahead. England successfully held off increased pressure from Slovakia to confirm their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland.

Slovakia boss slams "scared" England

Angry Slovakia manager Francesco Calzona hit out at what he saw as time-wasting antics from a "scared" England side during their last-16 clash, taking aim at Jordan Pickford in particular.

"In extra-time it was one-way traffic, we pinned them back and they relied on time-wasting and obstructionism," he said. "I was angry because one extra minute of stoppages with the amount of time-wasting especially from their goalkeeper (Pickford) was not enough.

"I did not like the performance of the referees at all, but we certainly didn’t lose because of that. We lost because of a couple of distractions, but clearly I am very proud of my team as we played positive football, put in a great performance and I think the people of Slovakia will be proud of that.

"We knew that we could not leave space between the lines, we all know what Bellingham can do and had to keep it tight. We had the chances in the first half to kill off the game and it would’ve changed everything.

"It is a source of pride to force a team like England to focus only on defending in extra-time. That means they were scared of us and in my view we deserved to go through."

Wright hails Mainoo

Ian Wright admitted that his praise of Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo will get him "loads of stick from Arsenal fans".

Mainoo, 19, has swiftly become one of England's most exciting young talents despite not being on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad radar until roughly six months ago. And before England's last-16 clash with Slovakia, Wright sang Mainoo's praises.

"You say you'd worry about [overhyping] him," the former Arsenal striker said on ITV. "I think when you are at Man United from the age of six - and I don't want to boost him up too much, I'm going to get loads of stick from Arsenal fans - but when you're playing at a club like that for that long and you're that level, you're a special person."

Iceland's unique launch

Iceland have released limited-edition Vindaloo frozen ready meals feature unique packaging after the Fat Les track 'Vindaloo', which was recorded for the 1998 World Cup, was named one of the most iconic England songs ever.

The packaging includes the word 'Vindaloo' 10 times, just like the lyrics from the song which research from Iceland showed to be the second most popular England tune behind 'Three Lions'. Iceland are also including £20 vouchers inside product packaging sleeves of the Vindaloo curries in selected, surprise stores across the country.

"England are through to the quarter-finals and now is the time for us to rally behind the team," Andrew Staniland, Group Buying Director at Iceland Foods and The Food Warehouse, said. "'Vindaloo' is a timeless anthem, and to boost support among our customers, we're celebrating by introducing special edition packaging for a limited run of our delicious Vindaloo ready meals."

Toney "disgusted" by Southgate

Gareth Southgate has revealed Ivan Toney was 'disgusted' at being brought off the bench four minutes into injury time during England's win over Slovakia.

"I had belief we would get a goal. The boys that came on, Ivan (Toney) played a big part – he was disgusted at me putting him on at that moment. There's no question he was pretty disgusted when I put him on with a minute to go," the England boss said.

"I think we've made up now. He's had a big impact in the second goal as well. You put a sub on at that time, it is a final throw of the dice. I completely understand it. I don't like putting a player in that position.

"But I had the feel that he'd be able to cause the chaos that happened. I have to say the courage shown by the players was fantastic tonight. We haven't come to get to a quarter-final.

"But to get through a night like tonight was fantastic character. We now play a Swiss team that have been very good. We have a couple of days to recover and get ready for them. We had enough attacking players on the pitch."

Bellingham clarifies gesture

Jude Bellingham has claimed that his gesture after scoring England's dramatic equaliser against Slovakia was "an inside joke with close friends" and not aimed at the opposition bench.

The midfielder came up with a 95th-minute leveller to end their opponents' hopes of an upset in the last 16 at the Euros. As he walked backed ahead of the restart, the Real Madrid midfield grabbed his groin and appeared to look towards the Slovakian bench.

Bellingham has since come out on social media to clarify that he was acting on an inside joke with some pals as he paid tribute to the performance of Slovakia, who were seconds away from causing a huge upset at the tournament.

England's saviour explained on social media: "An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight."

Belgium boss makes plea

Domenico Tedesco is urging Belgium’s players and fans to get back singing from the same hymn sheet against France after anger and boos greeted their group stage qualification.

The Belgian boss hit out at German authorities after his side were delayed arriving in Stuttgart for the goalless draw with Ukraine, with his players unable to complete a full warm up. During the match laser pens were shone in the eyes of star man Kevin De Bruyne, who cut an angry figure as he was then booed by his own fans.

Belgium scraped into the last-16 in second place in a Group E which ended with all four teams on four points, but Tedesco says that is all water under the bridge ahead of his side’s meeting with a similarly stuttering France in Dusseldorf.

“Anyone who knows me knows I don’t like to complain, so when I do it shows how much there was to it,” said Tedesco. “The authorities and tournament organisers know that I was unhappy, but it’s over now. We qualified.

“In terms of the fans it is done and dusted now. Everybody has the right to act as they see fit. For us it was disappointing to see as it wasn’t an easy game. The fans are allowed to express what they feel. They are paying a lot of money for a ticket so it’s okay, but it’s also okay for the team to be disappointed because we were qualified.”

Rice's clash with Slovakia boss

Declan Rice appeared to call the Slovakia head coach a 'bald c***' as tempers flared at the end of England's win over the minnows.

The Three Lions had to come from behind to claim a win in the Last 16 and set up a quarter-final tie with Switzerland. Rice played all 120 minutes in Gelsenkirchen in central midfield, with England forced to hold on towards the end of the game.

The Arsenal star was then involved in a furious bust-up with Slovakia head coach Francesco Calzona after the full-time whistle. Calzona had stormed over to the officials to confront them over a decision.

Rice fronted up to the Slovakia boss, who then shoved the England star. Players from both sides came piling in, with Rice seen shouting back at the Slovakians who had got involved in the incident.

A video emerged on social media which appeared to show Rice calling Calzona a 'bald c***'. Rice was led away by England team-mate Ivan Toney as another member of the Slovakia coaching staff confronted him and pushed him in the chest.

Bellingham's response to critics

Jude Bellingham revealed how the greatest goal of his career was driven by a determination to silence England’s critics.

As Bellingham wheeled away in celebration, his pure joy led to him screaming ‘who else?’ Last week, Kane felt compelled to hit back at former England stars Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer for their opinions on Gareth Southgate ’s team.

Bellingham, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday, said: “Playing for England should be one of the proudest moments of a footballer’s career, but at times it is quite difficult, you know?

“There’s a really intense pressure. The fans expect a lot from us, regardless of what happened in recent tournaments or years and years ago. People talk a lot - and I think you do have to take it personally a little bit. Sometimes it doesn’t go well and sometimes it feels like there’s a bit of a pile-on.

“It’s not nice to hear - but you can always use it. After moments like that, it’s always nice to throw something back to some people, I suppose. Playing for England is an enjoyable feeling but there’s also a lot of pressure because you hear people talk a lot of rubbish.

Football, being on the pitch, scoring goals and celebrating is my release - and it was maybe a message to a few people. It was a very happy moment.”

Prince William's reaction

Prince William couldn't contain his excitement after England's nail-biting victory over Slovakia in Euro 2024 – taking to Twitter to share a cheeky two-word response.

The match had fans on the edge of their seats as England trailed late on, until Jude Bellingham's sensational overhead kick levelled the score in the final moments of injury time to stop the Three Lions from heading home early. Harry Kane's extra-time header then sealed the deal, propelling the Three Lions into the quarter-finals.

Post-match, Prince William couldn't resist sharing his joy on @KensingtonRoyal, tweeting: "Emotional rollercoaster! Let's go @England! Quarter finals here we come! W."

Klopp makes England prediction

The former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes England's performances at Euro 2024 will inevitably improve, but he's stopped short of naming them as his favourites to win it.

England will face Switzerland in the last eight, and Klopp namechecked them when he was asked who he thinks will win the tournament when he was approached at the Mallorca Tennis Championships.

Klopp has moved to Mallorca after having a villa built on the Balearic island, and he appeared in a relaxed mood as he watched the tennis tournament wearing a Germany shirt and Adidas cap.

Speaking to Spanish presenter Agos Larocca and the Mallorca Tennis Championships Instagram account, Klopp said: "At the moment it looks a little bit like Spain could do it, but Germany Is good, France can be good, and England will be better, definitely."

Training ground move paid off

Harry Kane admitted that England practiced the long throw that led to Jude Bellingham's equaliser in training.

The Real Madrid man kept the Three Lions in the Euros when his overhead kick in the 95th minute forced extra-time against Slovakia, who were on course for a historic victory in Gelsenkirchen. England have struggled to click into gear from an attacking point of view in the tournament.

Prior to Bellingham's equaliser they hadn't registered an effort on target but, despite the talent available to them, a long throw proved to be the means by which they scored. Marc Guehi flicked on Kyle Walker's throw before the Champions League winner converted.

Kane confessed that long throws had been part of their remit at training with the players joking that it could come in handy should they need a goal - and so it proved - with the Bayern Munich man going on to score the winner in extra-time.

He said: "That's the desire and action from the boys and everyone involved. It looked tough for a second there but you keep going. We work on so many details throughout the week and we put in a long through a couple of days ago and said we might need it, be prepared for anything, and then Jude does what Jude does and what an unbelievable goal. He kept our tournament alive."

Southgate on the defensive

Gareth Southgate has defended his tactics during England's win over Slovakia.

"I had a funny feeling the game wasn't dead and I know that sounds ridiculous. We were pushing and probing. Ultimately it is the one we have thrown in the box that got us the goal," Southgate told BBC Sport.

"With 15 minutes to go you wonder if he is out on his feet. Him and Harry Kane produce those moments and that is why you don't makes changes when people are clamouring for more changes. We had enough attacking players on the pitch.

"We haven't come to get to a quarter-final but to get through a night like tonight was fantastic character and we now play a Swiss team that have been very good. We have a couple of days to recover and get ready for them."

Toney hails squad effort

Ivan Toney has hailed the efforts of England's full squad.

"I didn't play for the first three games, you have to be ready. You don't know when your chance is going to come. But I was in tthe right place at the right time to flick it to the back post," he told ITV.

"We literally spoke about that before the game kicked off and he put it into the back of the net. Players dropped into positions they don't normally play but we have quality players who are capable of playing anywhere.

"We had to defend at times. But the players we had defended very well. Hopefully this will kick us forward now. It should be a kickstart. Performances haven't quite been there, but we're getting results."

Fans confident England will go all the way

As jubilant fans streamed out of the stadium last night they vowed: “we can go all the way.”
They said England will now make the final in Berlin in two weeks' time. But first underdogs Switzerland await in the last eight next Saturday.
The match in Dusseldorf will kick off at 5pm and more than 40,000 England fans are expected to make the short trip across to Germany.
Gareth Southgate’s men showed tremendous spirit recovering from going 1-0 down when Ivan Schranz scored in the first half silencing the stadium apart from 5,000 bouncing Slovakian fans packed behind Jordan Pickford’s goal. As fans jumped onto the trams taking them back to Gelsenkirchen city centre after the match there was a party atmosphere.

Scaffolder John Peaco*ck, 39, from Preston, Lancs, said: “That’s fantastic, we are in the next round and that is all we can ask for.
“I might have to phone home and say I'm staying out for another week!
“C’mon England."

Electrician Paul Robinson, 51, from Darlington said: “That’s better. We’re through to the last eight.
“We can go all the way and do this.
“This is our time. We’ve got momentum now.
“Berlin here we come!”

Slovakia head coach hails his side

Slovakia head coach Francesco Calzona has insisted his side deserved something from the game.

Wright downcast despite win

Ian Wright is arguably quite downcast in his analysis.

"You look forward to the next game, but you don't look forward to it thinking 'yeah we're going to do this, we're playing well'," Wright said.

"It feels like moments. What we need is some structure. Are we going to bring in another individual, or are we going to say 'it's his turn now.'?

"At some stage, we're going to have to find a way to beat teams playing through teams."

Bellingham fires back at critics

Jude Bellingham has fired back at his critics after his wondergoal helped England beat Slovakia.

"Good win, through to the next round. Very happy. It's been tough the last week or so to try to keep the negative energy outside the camp," Bellingham said.

"Today, they've been ready for us. We showed the kind of character that England's missed in times before. We showed it today and it's really important to get through.

"You try to find different edges because at this level it's so hard to score goals. Every team plays to defend and keep it zero.

"If it's a goal that helps the team lift the tournament then it'll be right up there. Until then we'll see. I know what I can deliver regardless of what people say."

Jacob Leeks

Kane keen to find momenteum

Harry Kane is keen to use this win as a launchpad for England's tournament.

He told ITV: "We had to find a way to balance the team. The subs who came on done brilliant. In this competition you find a way to win and that's what we've done.

"We'll do whatever it takes. This team knows how to dig deep. That's exactly what we've done today. Of course we could have been better. But ultimately it's a results business.

"That's what we care about. We can enjoy this, enjoy the comeback and hopefully take that momenteum into the rest of the tournament."

Jacob Leeks

Keane downplays England criticism

Roy Keane has downplayed criticism of England's performance against Slovakia, insisting the result is all that matters.

"Sometimes after a game you reflect on it. I know the lads will agree. At this level it's all about getting over the line and winning," Keane told ITV.

"Everyone wants a great performance. But if they keep getting results and going through. Let's see how they go.

"You have to give them praise. We were really critical at half-time, but they've found a way to win. God help us when Bellingham starts playing well because he produced two huge moments.

"They got over the line and you have to give credit where it's due. They found a way to win."

Jacob Leeks

Kane hails Bellingham wondergoal

Harry Kane has hailed Jude Bellingham's wondergoal as one of the best in England's history.

He told ITV: "It looked tough for a second there. But you keep going. We work on so many details throughout the week. We put in a long throw late a couple of days ago because we thought we might need it.

"Jude does what Jude does. What an unbelieveable goal. It's kept our tournament alive. I know the fans back home would have enjoyed that. What a win.

"One of the best [goals] in our country's history I reckon. What a player he is, he works so hard for the team. There's been a lot of talk about him the last couple of days, but it shows what he can do.

"In big moments he steps up. And that's what we need, we need everyone to step up in moments. He done that today."
